This shows the process of how my painting Smoke Signals was created.  Applying the gesso on thickly, making creative markings with a palette knife gave a very freeing energy to start.  A burnt sienna wash, then using the same color to draw the figure and block in some of the darker areas.  A limited palette of ivory black and titanium white to mix up various values, applying layers to create the illusion of form.
