River to the Sea

The seaside town I live in has received quite a bit of rain recently, and the beaches fill up with marvellous serpentine rivers of water inching towards the sea.  Robert Henri encouraged one to develop their visual memory and attempt to paint that vital moment when one was present in the landscape. Here from my imagination and memory is what I remember from yesterday’s walk along the shore.  Henri also said that the good thing about painting from memory is that so much is forgotten, and I believe he meant by that that only the essence remains.  A good painting exercise.

"Memory takes a lot of poetic license. It omits some details; others are exaggerated, according to the emotional value of the articles it touches, for memory is seated predominantely in the heart."  Tennessee Williams
